Being a successful freelance contractor doesn't happen by accident.
You simply can't just announce to the world that you have chosen a career as a freelance consultant and then sit back and do nothing but wait for contract offers to come in.
There are a number of ways that experienced contractors do about promoting themselves;
1. Via Agencies - many organisations use the services of an agent to help them to find them suitable contractors - it saves them time and energy and provides a 'legal' buffer for them to contract in individuals minimising the risk of IR35 legislation on them.
2. Directly targeting clients - targeting specific clients who you have identified as having issues that you have experience in resolving is another way to gain new business, although you will need a very well crafted letter of introduction to attract their attention.
3. Through your existing contacts - many successful contractors believe that this is the most effective way to source new business - people who already know you, understand your skills and experience are far better placed to recommend you to a client than anyone else
4. Networking - both online and offline - You need to build your presence and network of contacts who can assist you in finding work. There are many networking organisations, both offline and online - choose the ones that are relevant to your industry sector or level of experience
Ultimately, the level of your success in each of these four categories will determine your success as a freelance contractor - so get good at promoting yourself now.
