How important can my CV be?

The simple answer to this question is VERY!

Your curriculum vitae or CV is your marketing document.

It's your sales brochure. It contains a summary of your relevant job experience and education.

As this tends to be the first item that a potential client encounters about you, you need to make sure that it highlights the things that they want to see. Many people believe that the decision to 'employ' is taken at the interview stage. In reality, the interview is really only a mechanism to reaffirn a gut decision that many people take after reading the CV.

You must therefore impress upon the client that you have the skills and experience required to do the job, and that you understand the client's requirements.

When writing your CV, remember that it is a summary of your skills and expertise.  Therefore it must be brief and concise.  A good CV is usually 2-4 pages long, this should guide you in making sure that you only write the experience directly relevant to the particular position.

One of the common mistakes many people make is writing a CV as a life story from birth, through education and employment.

Remember, you basically have a few seconds to attract a potential client that you're perfect for the job so make sure that your profile or list of skills are right on the front page.  Since you only have a few seconds to get the reader's attention, your CV must be easy to read.

Make use of bullet points, as these are easier quicker to read.  When a client scans a CV, they only pick out the keywords to see if the person has the experience and expertise that they are looking for.  They can't be bothered to read long sentences.

These are some of the qualities that clients look for:

-  work experience related to the skills required

-  contracts that have been renewed

-  work experience with stable and reputable companies

-  good academic background

A high impact CV is made specifically for the client that you're sending it out to.  You need to convey to the client that you are the person for the job.  It is important to show that you have the skills they need and that you have provided business value to previous clients by using those skills.  A high impact CV contains these essential sections:

-  Your name and contact information (address, phone numbers)

-  Your profile - a short summary of why you believe you are right for the role

-  A list of your skills that matches the requirement

-  A list of achievements

The important thing is to tailor your CV for the position that you are applying for.

From the job advertisement you will see the skills and experience that the client requires for the job.  So on your CV you must focus on the strengths and experience you have gained from previous positions and the skills that can be applied to the job assignment.  You must target exactly what is required and resist the urge to include other things which are not relevant to this particular job.
