How do I plan for growth?
A contracting business is like any other business - if you want to grow your business, you need to sit down and think and plan about how you are going to achieve it.

There are really six considerations for you at this stage;

1. Why do you want to grow the business? What are your aspirations for the business? Do you want to grow something hat you can sell in the future? Are your happy just to generate a 'nice income'? - the answer to these and many other questions like them will form the bedrock on your future business growth. They provide the direction that you want to move forward towards.

2. You then need to develop a plan and ensure that you have the right funding in place to allow you to reach your goals for the business. You should think about identifying probably no more than 6 key performance indicators that can guide you as you grow

3. You need to then think about how you will manage the business in the future. How will you combine growing the business with client delivery?

4. Who do you need to bring into the business to help you to achieve your growth ambitions and how can you keep them motivated?

5. Many small businesses chase turnover and forget about the importance of managing the margins. They expect to see big profits at the year end and the get surprised when they don't materialise. Keep a careful check on your margins and costs.

6. How are you going to exit the business - you may think this is a silly question at this stage, but if you do plan to exit the business within the next 5/10 years, having a good understanding of how will determine what you need to be doing and how you need to structure your business moving forward.
