In this section, we;ll look at securing work via Agents. See Marketing Yourself for help and guidance about getting work direct with clients.
So, a common question amongst professional contractors is "Do I need an Agent?" The answer is no, but they may be a good source of new business for you, as the better ones effectively act as an outsourced marketing service for you and given that over 75% of all new contracts are secured via agents, they need to factor in your plans.
There are two main ways to find an agent to work with - (i) find them by responding to published roles or (ii) identify one or two that will work with you to proactively promote your services to their client base.
Most agencies advertise their live roles either on their own website or in many cases on job portals such as www.just4contractors.com. When responding to job advertisement, remember that the Agent will probably be inundated with responses and your good is to initially convince the agent that you are right for the role.
It is worth highlighting here a typical agency business model. They work on behalf of their client base to source quality candidates for live roles. Often they are not working exclusively with the client - there may be three or four other agencies working for the client - that's why you see the same job advertised three or four times!. Typically, an agent will only receive income from successfully placed candidates - they don;t get paid for the work that they undertake if they don't place the candidate with the client. This being the case, they will be looking to move as quickly as possible to provide their clients with a number of candidates that they feel have a good chance of being successfully placed.
As such, you must first grab the attention of the Agent with a well crafted CV and accompanying letter/ email. This should briefly explain why you are suitable for the advertised role.
