Can I work from home?
Yes you can and for many Freelance Contractors, this is exactly what they do. When they are not working on client sites, working form home tends to be the easiest and most cost effective option.

The benefits of working from home are numerous - it is a low cost option, you don't have to get through the morning traffic, you have complete flexibility on the hours/ days that you work, you can accomodate family needs and you have the ability to take a break whenever you want.

However, there are limitations and you need to be aware of how you respond to them. You need to be disciplined and organised and have access to the right equipment. It is easy to feel isolated and you miss the office banter. If not controlled, the business can get in the way of your family life and you need to be careful about interruptions from friends family and neighbours who may not respect your work time.

Dependent upon your business focus, it may not be practical to work from home. Consider whether you need special planning permission or other legal approval.

Follow this 10 step process for successful home working;

1. Treat your working time as seriously as you would if you were an employee or on client business

2. Create your own defined work space - ideally this should be able to be closed off/ screened off to enable you to separate out your home life from your work life

3. Make sure you have the right furniture and equipment, especially your chair.

4. Install a separate telephone line or alternatively set up a Skype Connection so that there is a clear distinction between your work and your home calls

5. Ensure that you have the right 'business' insurance to cover your business equipment

6. Plan your days and separate out personal and work related activities. Allocate specific timeslots for individual activities. Make sure that you WORK the PLAN

7. Take planned breaks and get some fresh air - you'll come back feeling refreshed and much more productive

8. Make sure that you build your network, both online and off line - get out of the home office and meet people from your network for a coffee.

9. Dress for success - you have the option to stay in your PJs all day if you want to but what will it do to your motivation? Some people need to feel dressed for business before they can be at their best.

10. Reward yourself at the end of the day for a job well done - go down the pub, go to the gym, see some friends - chill out and come back tomorrow feeling relaxed and refreshed.
